10 Tips to Prolong the Life of Your Pool Filter Cartridge
1. Clean the elements per Cleaning Instructions.
2. Do not allow excessive buildup of debris or dirt on the cartridge
3. Use a soft brush to clean the pool filter cartridge, never use a stiff brush to clean the filter element as this can damage the pleated fiber – a water hose nozzle, water wand or automatic spray cleaners are recommended for ease of cleaning.
4. Never use a power washer to clean the filter element as it could easily puncture to media element.
5. Never use household bleach or acids to clean the filter element as this will weaken the fibers in the filter cartridge and decrease the lifespan. Some will say it’s okay to use acid as long as it’s a 20 to 1 mix. We know it breaks down the media fibers sooner, thus needing to replace more often. So do as you wish, but we simply advise against it.
6. Maintain proper water chemistry in the pool water.
7. Do not allow the pressure in the pool filter to rise above 8 – 10 pounds over normal operating pressure – when it does it is time to clean the cartridges.
8. Alternate between two sets of cartridges when cleaning. Maintain a backup set of cartridges in the garage so you can replace the older unites with newer cartridges, this also allows time for you to soak and clean the cartridges more thoroughly. Then they can be stored and used the next time you need to replace your pool filter cartridge.
9. Use an enzyme treatment to break down the oils that build up on the filter cartridge as a good chemical cleaner to dissolve the oils, grease and fungi prior to cleaning the cartridge.
10. Place a Filter Saver in the skimmer of your pool, this is a fine net material sock that fits within your skimmer basket and collects debris and tiny particles that can slip through the skimmer basket and the pump basket and build up on your cartridge. Simply empty the Filter Saver as needed, rinse and reuse until they wear out, and then replace them. They are drastically cheaper than replacing cartridges prematurely.
Yes, we want to sell cartridges, but we also wish for you to get the longest life possible out of each one. We feel that in the long run if you follow good advice, you will appreciate us even more and thus we build a long term relationship.

How to measure your filter cartridge.
A. Measure the outside diameter of the cartridge in inches. (+/- 1/16)
B. Measure the overall length of the cartridge in inches (+/- 1/16), including the end caps. Do not include any handles, strings, etc. A more accurate measurement is made by measuring through the center of the cartridge when possible.
C. If the top and/or bottom is open, measure the inside diameter of the opening (+/- 1/16 in.). Match the cartridge end cap configuration to a corresponding one in the complete end cap gallery.
D. Make note of the manufacturer (OEM) and model number of the filter the replacement cartridge will be installed in.
E. Take note whether or not there is a center core (PVC pipe in center). Also count the number of pleats (+/- 2).

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR CARTRIDGE FILTER
Cleaning your swimming pool cartridge fitler is really quite an easy task. The filter should be cleaned anytime the pressure on the filter guage reads 8 - 10 pounds higher than normal running pressure. To clean your filter simply follow these easy steps:
1. Turn off your pool equipment (it is best to turn off the master switch so the timer does not automatically turn on the equipment while the filter is taken apart)
2. Release the pressure from your pool filter tank by opening the release valve which is ususlly located near the pressure guage.
3. Unscrew the band around the middle or top of the tank to remove the tank top
4. Remove the cartridges from inside the filter (cartridge pool filters hold 1 - 4 cartridges so REFER TO YOUR OWNERS MANUAL FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON REMOVING THE CARTRIDGE/S)
5. Using a cleaning device such as a water wand attached to your garden hose gently wash off the losoe debris and sand from the unit. Spray from the top of the cartridge down. To remove tougher debris spray with a cartridge spray cleaner or soak (follow directions on bottle of cleaner). Re-rinse the unit. DO NOT use a high power sprayer such as a power washer or car wash sprayer as this can damage the filter media and reduce the life of the cartridge.
6. Once the cartridge is clean it may be returned to the pool filter. Be sure you have removed all cleaner residue. **If using muriatic acid to remove tough stains only use 1 part Muriatic Acid to 20 parts water, add acid to water and HANDLE WITH CARE**
7. If you have a back up set of cartridges you may place them in the filter and allow your newly cleaned ones to dry out. After they are dry brush off with a soft brush and store for future use.
